About this ceremony

Upanayana is the samskara that begins a boy’s formal study of the Vedas. The ceremony includes nandi and punyahavachana, the wearing of the yajnopavita, brahmopadesha — in which the Gayatri mantra is imparted — the first bhiksha, and the agni karya that the initiate will thereafter perform daily.

Why it is performed

  • Marks the beginning of Vedic study and daily sandhyavandana
  • Performed at a muhurta matched to the boy’s horoscope
  • The daily practice is taught, not merely performed once

What the ceremony includes

  • Nandi, punyahavachana and Ganapati pooja
  • Yajnopavita dharana and brahmopadesha
  • Agni karya and the first bhiksha
  • Instruction in sandhyavandana for daily practice

What to prepare

  • Share the boy’s horoscope so the muhurta can be matched
  • Arrange the yajnopavita, kaupina, danda, deer skin and new clothes as listed
  • Homa kunda space with adequate ventilation is required

The full samagri list is sent in writing once the date is confirmed.

Questions about Upanayana

Traditionally between the ages of seven and sixteen depending on the family’s custom, though it is performed later where circumstances required a delay.

Yes. Teaching the daily practice is part of the ceremony, and we go through it with the boy before we leave.
