About this ceremony

Gruhapravesha marks the moment a house becomes a home. The ceremony begins with Ganapati pooja to clear obstacles, followed by punyahavachana to purify the premises, Vaastu shanti to settle the vaastu purusha, and kalasha sthapana at the entrance. The family then enters with the right foot first, carrying the kalasha, and milk is boiled on the new stove until it overflows — the sign of abundance entering the house.

Why it is performed

  • Purifies the new premises before the family moves in
  • Pacifies vaastu doshas arising from construction
  • Invokes prosperity and protection for the household
  • Marks the occupation of the house at an auspicious muhurta

What the ceremony includes

  • Ganapati pooja and punyahavachana
  • Vaastu shanti and Vaastu homa (where prescribed)
  • Navagraha pooja
  • Kalasha sthapana and entry procession
  • Milk boiling on the new stove and first cooking
  • Sankalpa, mantra recitation and mangalarati

What to prepare

  • The house should be cleaned and the kitchen ready for the first cooking
  • Keep a new vessel for the milk, and rice, jaggery and ghee for the first meal
  • Arrange mango leaves, banana stems, flowers and coconuts as per the samagri list
  • The family should be ready at the venue at least 30 minutes before the muhurta

The full samagri list is sent in writing once the date is confirmed.

Questions about Gruhapravesha

Yes. A shorter form — Ganapati pooja, punyahavachana and kalasha sthapana followed by the milk boiling — is customary when moving into a rented home.

No. What matters is that the kitchen is usable for the first cooking. Furnishing can continue afterwards.

Most gruhapravesha muhurtas fall in the early morning, often between 6:00 and 9:00 AM. The exact window is confirmed when the date is fixed.
