About this ceremony

Akshara Abyasa (Vidyarambha) begins a child’s education. After Ganapati and Saraswati pooja, the child’s hand is guided to write the first letters — traditionally in a tray of rice, and then on a slate — while the appropriate mantras are recited.

Why it is performed

  • Begins the child’s learning at an auspicious moment
  • Invokes the blessings of Saraswati for study and speech
  • A short ceremony that children take part in happily

What the ceremony includes

  • Ganapati pooja and Saraswati pooja
  • Writing of the first letters in rice and on a slate
  • Mantra recitation and aashirvada

What to prepare

  • Keep a tray of rice, a slate and chalk, and new clothes for the child ready
  • Arrange fruits, flowers and a coconut as per the list

The full samagri list is sent in writing once the date is confirmed.
